IP/Product Counsel manages intellectual property portfolio, enforces licensing compliance, and advises product teams on IP, open source licensing, and regulatory implications.
Chainguard is the trusted source for open source. By delivering hardened, secure, and production-ready builds of all the open source software engineers and AI agents rely on, Chainguard helps organizations build faster, stay compliant, and eliminate risk.
Our customers include Fortune 500 enterprises and global industry leaders, including Anduril, Canva, Fortinet, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, OpenAI, Snap Inc., and Snowflake.
Chainguard is venture-backed by leading investors, including Amplify, IVP, Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Mantis VC, Redpoint Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Spark Capital.
Weâre looking for our first IP/Product Counsel to help Chainguard protect, monetize, and scale what weâre building. Chainguard moves quickly. As a result, open source licensing questions, product launch nuances, and IP protection are part of the day-to-day business, not occasional legal requests.
This role sits at the intersection of IP and product. Youâll manage our growing IP portfolio, lead enforcement efforts when our licensing terms are violated, and work closely with product and engineering teams as they build and launch new products and features.
This is a role with a significant runway. Weâre not looking for someone to walk in and build a fully staffed function on day one. Weâre looking for someone who can take ownership, build scalable processes, and grow the function over time.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in IP law, particularly open source licensing, trademark and copyright, with patent and technology transactions experience as a plus. Youâll also have experience working closely with product teams, including drafting product terms, reviewing terms of service, and advising on the relevant privacy, licensing, and IP implications of new products and features.
You should be comfortable working across both sides of IP: proactively building protections for the company and enforcing those protections when needed. Fluency in open source licensing is required, including knowledge of standard permissive and copyleft licenses (e.g., MIT, Apache 2.0, BSD, GPL, LGPL, MPL) and non-standard (e.g. dual license) , as youâll work with engineering teams on open source questions on a regular basis.
Chainguard recently experienced the busiest product launch stretch in company history. The pace isnât slowing down, and neither are the IP and licensing questions that come with it.
This role will sit at the center of that work. Youâll help build the protections around what weâre creating, handle disputes when they arise, and partner directly with product and engineering teams before they ship.
As Chainguard continues to scale, so will this function. For the right person, thereâs a real opportunity to shape how we approach IP and product counsel and potentially build and lead a team over time.

Designs and develops autonomous systems for heavy construction equipment, working on perception, planning, and control algorithms in unstructured environments.
Weâre Blue River, a team of innovators driven to create intelligent machinery that solves monumental problems for our customers. We empower our customers - farmers, construction crews, and foresters to implement safer and more sustainable solutions, driving increased profitability with less reliance on scarce labor. We believe that focusing on the small stuff, pixel-by-pixel and task-by-task, leads to big gains.
Blue River Technology aligns with John Deereâs vision to âinnovate on behalf of humanityâ by quickly identifying and solving high-value, high-uncertainty challenges in AI, machine learning, computer vision, and robotics. BRT acts as a research and development flywheel, building not only new products but also new platforms that reliably create value for both Deere and its customers. From fully autonomous machines to highly precise farming equipment, BRT and Deere are partnering to deliver technical breakthroughs across industries such as agriculture and construction.
Our people are at the heart of what we do. Through cross-disciplinary collaboration, this mission-driven team is eager to define the new frontier of robotics. We are always asking hard questions, rapidly iterating, and getting our boots in the field to figure it out. We wonât give up until weâve made a tangible and positive impact on the planet!
Blue River Technology is based in Santa Clara, CA.
Summary
Construction is facing a structural labor shortage that isnât going away. An aging workforce, declining trade enrollment, and growing infrastructure demand mean the industry needs autonomy, not as a novelty, but as a necessity. The market opportunity is massive, and the technology gap is real.
Weâre building machines that navigate, perceive, and operate in unstructured heavy-construction environments - dirt, dust, steep grades, and dynamic site conditions that challenge the assumptions baked into most autonomy stacks. The technical problems are real and unsolved: robust perception across sensor modalities in environments that degrade each one, planning and controls for heavy equipment with dynamics unlike those of a passenger car, and safeguarding systems where the consequences of getting it wrong are severe. Construction autonomy also has structural advantages over public-road self-driving. Sites are partially or fully closed, the set of actors is known and constrained, and there is real opportunity to define and enforce operational design domain restrictions. This means a shorter path from a capable prototype to a deployed product â the kind of environment where strong engineering decisions translate into shipped systems, not endless corner-case tails.
We are seeking a motivated Senior Systems Engineer for Blue River Technologyâs autonomous construction initiative. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining our requirements framework, driving robust verification and validation (V&V) processes, and building simulation tools that ensure our machinery operates safely and reliably in complex environments. This highly cross-functional role spans hardware, software, machine learning, and functional safety, covering the entire development lifecycle from early development and testing to field deployment. We are looking for an experienced, collaborative systems thinker eager to bridge engineering disciplines and shape the future of construction autonomy.

At Blue River, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected pay range is between $131,000 â $228,000/year for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus and a competitive benefit package. During the recruitment process, we may identify an alternative role or level to which you are more suited. If your ideal role at Blue River differs from the advertised position, we will provide an updated pay range as soon as possible during the hiring process.
